Current Art Show:  Matti Havens, “Geometries”

Our newest label artist, Matti Havens, is featured on our brand new 2013 Social Club Red which features an image of his screen print “Circles (Black Mirror).

The works presented in “Geometries are based upon simple patterns and geometric forms that are layered to produce depth and movement. Most of the works are based on the principle of overlaying two or more offset patterns to create a new pattern that is quite unlike and much more complex than any of the components.  Matti accomplishes this by purposefully misaligning the registration on the screen printed circles and by making multiple in-camera exposures or long exposure photographs. The layering of the patterns adds color and depth to the screen prints while the photos become more complex reflections of the basic pattern present in the object while obscuring the actual object that is photographed. Color in the Impossible Shapes series is used to study the impact of different colors on the impression of three-dimensional space versus flatness.

About Matti Havens

Matti Havens was born in the Netherlands and raised in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Furthermore, he has lived, studied and/or worked in Ecuador, Italy, South Korea, Switzerland and Poland. After earning his MFA in Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art, he had a six-month residency in Zurich, Switzerland in 2007. In the last few years he has been learning about photography and screen printing, where he studied at the Art Student’s League.  His interest in photography was sparked by obtaining his grandfather’s, circa 1955, Dacora camera in the summer of 2013. He lives and works in New York City.
